April Round Up

Firstly, welcome to all our new members over the last couple of months, Lucy Halford, Helen Lancaster (unfortunately fractured her foot within days of joining so wishing her a speedy recovery) Amanda Brown, Amy Sellick, Nick Presdee, Daniel Hawthorne and Tim Heal, I hope the Club delivers what you were expecting.

April has been a busy month for WCT members who have embraced the sunshine and showers and taken part in a number of training sessions and events before the season gets into full swing.

On the training front, the two Sunday training rides from Bospool have been well attended, with the shorter ride across the Moors being very popular and running every Saturday throughout April. The longer ride ran twice and took to the hills. On 8th April Jeannie, James, Adrian and Chris went up Burrington, taking in Shipham hill on the way, and on 15th April Jeannie, Mark, Adrian, Nigel and Caroline cycled to Langport via High Ham.

We’ve had the first round of Club Champs but only around 10 members took part in all 3 disciplines which was a shame so we are looking to change the format to encourage more next year (ideas welcome)

An increasing number of members have also been addressing their all important core strength and stability by attending the Thursday night Fitball and Pilates session at Bospool, where they have embraced their balls and rolled around on firm foam. Martin’s spinning classes have also been well attended as members work on their technique, strength and power.

Cycle sportives are a great way to get in the miles for longer events later in the season. On 1st April, Jeannie and Mark took part in the inaugural Hammer sportive in Devon, a challenging 130k ride, with only 4k of flat road, and many of the hills being 20% or more! On 22nd April Jeannie, Adrian and Gordon took part in the inaugural 105k Exmoor Beauty sportive from Minehead Butlins. Another tough ride with a “scary” (Jeannie) “adrenaline rush” (Adrian) descent of Dunkery Beacon.

Members have also taken part in a number of running events, both local and further afield. Michelle and Andy C took part in the Taunton Marathon and Vicky did the London Marathon. Chris and Emma jetted off to do a 10k race in Dublin and Martin, Ceeli, Michelle, Andy C and Amanda did the new Bridgwater 10k event. The last race of the Bospool 5k winter series was also well attended by members.

We did a transition training session on the Monday before the Supersprint, which went well despite the pouring rain, it was very cold but everyone just got on with it, shoes off & everything, (and said they enjoyed it)! We are planning a transition practice this Wednesday evening at Burnham reply to this email for more details if you are interested.

The Burnham Supersprint Triathlon turned out to be a swim/run due to the adverse weather conditions, but lots of members braved the elements to compete and several made it to the podium. The New Forest Triathlon was cancelled for safety reasons (much to Bev & Jo’s relief I believe!)

So well done to all our members and apologies to anyone we may have missed out. Make sure you let Jeannie or Ceeli know what you are doing each month so we can include your efforts and achievement in the next monthly training and events round up at the end of May. Keep training and competing hard!”
