Bradford upon Avon Olympic Triathlon 2011

Probably the warmest day of the year saw 7 club members take on the inaugural Bradford on Avon olympic distance Triathlon last Sunday. The 7.45am briefing meant for an early rise to get to this picturesque venue.
The swim consisted of a 2 lap out and back course in the river Avon, split into 3 waves. of about 45 competitors in each wave.
In the 1st wave we had Marc Bostock and the ever improving Matt Cooke. It was a surprise to see Marc exit the swim in about 6th place nearly 2 mins ahead of Matt only later to discover he had decided to turn around at the wrong buoy on the second lap!! Wave 2 saw our girls Jeannie, Ceeli and Caroline in a mixed wave. Although seen waving to people on the bank whilst swimming, Ceeli still recorded the fastest swim from our clan in 25.02 and 6th in her wave. In wave 3, Martin and Garrad set off with all the old gits and both had good steady swims.

T1 again saw Ceeli go through the quickest in 1.36 while Marc obviously feeling guilty about cutting the swim short took over a minute longer. So out onto the 35k undulating bike course. With light winds and warm air for the first time in weeks, it was good to not have to worry about being blown away. Just 4 seconds separated Ceeli (1.10.15) Garrad (1.10.17) and Matt (1.10.19) on what proved to be a pretty technical and at times scary course. I was pleased with my split of 1.05.23 which was 4th fastest of the day. Caroline who seemed her usual nervous self, was concerned about coming last, but was well placed inside the top 100.

There was a surprise in T2 with Me taking the honors probably for the first time ever just a couple of seconrd ahead of  Matt, Garrad and Ceeli. The 10k run was almost completely flat doing an out and back route along the Kennet and Avon canal tow path. What should have been a straightforward run proved quite eventful with Jeannie getting nipped in the shin by a dog and Matt taking the only wrong turn on the course. This just about explains his split of 50.48 some 8 mins slower than he is capable of. Well thats his excuse!!! With the weather warming up, it was a tougher run than expected but grateful for the shade from the tree-lined paths. I somehow recorded the fastest run in 37.53 but there were good performances all round.

A wallow in the river to cool down while waiting for the presentation was perfect to aid recovery. The results proved good for the club with Jeannie winning 1st Super vet, Ceeli 2nd lady and me 3rd overall and 1st vet.
