On Sunday 6th March 2011 Burnham Swim and Sports Academy held a super sprint aquathlon, which consisted of a 250m swim and a 2.5km run. This was the first time they had done this short distance for a swim/run and it turned out to be very popular with 54 starters. It attracted novices trying out this style of racing for the first time but there were also some experienced athletes there with the distance being useful for a bit of speed work.

It was strange waiting for the swim knowing that the race was only going to last around 15 minutes, it meant that being quick from start to finish and a fast transition was all the more important. As we put our trainers out the cold hit us, it made the idea of running down the beach in a wet costume a very unpleasant prospect!

There were 8 WCT members competing, Chris Rouse, Emma Course, Paul De St Paer, Sara Hudghton, Martin Pople, Alice Hector, Charlotte Rogers and me. Apart from Martin, we were all in the same swim wave, which made for some exciting racing. I was in a lane with Alice, Sara and Charlotte so my plan was just to hang on as long as I could in the swim then make up some time on the run!! Sara tucked in behind Alice, Sara had entered the race as an afterthought as she has not been doing any training other than a bit of swimming, Alice has had a quiet winter but is getting back to fitness now. They were the fastest swims of the day coming out the water with 3 seconds between them, 3.12 and 3.15 respectively, Charlotte was out next in 3.31 and I was 10seconds behind Charlotte. Chris, Emma and Paul were close behind, Chris did his 10 lengths in 3.54, Paul 3.56 and Emma 4.02!

Alice held onto her lead and completed the run in 10.20, to finish 1st overall (including the men!) in a brilliant time of 13.21. I managed to overtake Charlotte and Sara on the run but could not hold Paul off, he came storming past me, with a fantastic run split of 9.56, he was the fastest of the day and the only one inside 10 mins. Chris was the next WCT member over the line, he passed Sara on the home straight to finish 10seconds ahead of her with Charlotte just 15 seconds behind Sara. Emma, who was competing in her first event of this kind, completed the run in 14mins exactly. Martin Pople, (who doesn’t compete very often and confesses to hating swimming and running!!) still managed to do the swim in 5.14 and the run in15.05 to finish 8th in his age group.

Although not a WCT member someone that needs a mention is Oscar Rogers (Martin Rogers’ son), who is just 10yrs old, as he did the swim on 3.57 and the run in 10.49, to finish with a time of 14.46, making him 3rd male overall!! Watch out for this talented future WCT member.
